I have never really been into the genre of contemporary books, and most of the ones that I have read only gave me a stronger disdain for them. But a few months ago I decided at 2 o’clock in the morning that I just could not sleep and wanted to read a stand-alone book. I wasn’t in the mood for fantasy (fantasy is a genre I normally gravitate too), I wanted something that was easy to follow without having to understand the backstory and setting of the book. So I decided to pick up another contemporary book. I went into this book having little hope of enjoying it, and ended up falling in love with the book. The book was Ugly Love. I was very surprised and enthralled by this book. After reading the entire book in one sitting and some 3 hours later, I sat in my bed at 5 in the morning just starring at this book. This book was simple AMAZING! Colleen Hoover is the queen of contemporary books. Ugly Love gave me hope that contemporary books could be for me. Most of the contemporary I have read has been a fairy tale romance with unreal expectations, however Ugly Love is gritty and real. It shows the beauty and pain of love, and how not all love stories are about perfect couples who fall in love instantly and live happily ever after.
Ugly Love tells the story of 22 year old Tate, who moves in with her brother who lives in San Francisco. Upon arriving at her brother’s apartment, she encounters the incredibly sexy and mysterious Miles Archer. Miles is a pilot and works with Tate’s brother, not to mention he is now her new neighbour as well. Their mutual attraction is evident and allows the two to have the perfect set-up, one of them doesn’t want love while the other doesn’t have the time for it. This allows for sex with no strings attached, as long as they can follow the rules. “Don’t ask about my past,” he says firmly. “And never expect a future.” From the very beginning Tate has known the rules and what Miles wants out of this, but things may not be as simple as they might want them to be, as love gets ugly. Colleen Hoover’s writing is stunning and it made me feel as if I was experience every emotion along with Tate and made me feel the pain that Miles endures. Not only did I feel the joy that the characters felt but also the bad and the painful, my heart literally was hurting as I read word after word, page after page. Each character was incredibly likeable, and made me want to continue reading to find out more about the mysterious and closed off Miles Archer. Ugly Love is told from both Miles and Tate’s point of view, but what makes Ugly Love different is that Tate’s chapters focus on the present, while Miles chapters show his past before he meets Tate. The brilliant storyline and characters made Ugly Love a fantastic read, and it is now my FAVOURTIE contemporary book ever! I highly recommend this book, and rate it a 5 out of 5 stars! I have never read any other book of Colleen Hoover, but Ugly Love has opened my eyes to loving contemporary books, and I look forward to reading some of Colleen Hoover’s other works. RATING: 5/5 - Lee
